Packing is the part of moving that most people dread — and it’s usually the part that causes the most stress on moving day when things aren’t ready, boxes aren’t labelled, and fragile items haven’t been wrapped properly. Here’s how to do it properly.
Most people massively underestimate how long packing takes. A typical three-bedroom house will take the average person two to three full days to pack properly. Start at least two weeks before your move date, beginning with rooms and items you use least — spare bedrooms, loft storage, and out-of-season clothing.
Good quality boxes make a significant difference. Double-walled boxes are worth the extra cost for heavy items like books. You’ll also need plenty of packing tape, bubble wrap, tissue paper, and permanent markers for labelling. Don’t try to save money by using old supermarket boxes — they collapse under weight and can cause damage.
This is one of the most common packing mistakes. Books, crockery, and other heavy items should always go in small boxes. Large boxes packed with heavy items are almost impossible to lift safely and are much more likely to split at the bottom.
Every single fragile item should be wrapped individually in bubble wrap or tissue paper before being placed in a box. Fill any gaps in the box with scrunched paper or clothing to prevent items from moving in transit. Always mark fragile boxes clearly on all sides.
Write the contents and the destination room on every box. Better still, use a colour-coding system — a different coloured sticker for each room. This makes unloading far quicker and means your removal team can place every box in the right room without having to ask.
Set aside an essentials box containing everything you’ll need on the first night in your new home. Think kettle, mugs, tea and coffee, phone chargers, toilet roll, a change of clothes, bedding, and any medications. Keep this box with you rather than loading it on the van.
If you can safely dismantle flat-pack furniture, bed frames, and wardrobes before moving day, do it. This saves significant time on the day and reduces the risk of damage. Keep all screws and fittings in labelled bags taped to the relevant piece of furniture.
Towels, duvets, and clothing are excellent free packing materials. Use them to wrap mirrors, artwork, and other fragile items. This saves on bubble wrap and means your soft furnishings do double duty during the move.Need help with packing as well as the move itself?
