10 Packing Tips for a Stress-Free Move in West Lancashire

Moving home is one of life’s biggest events — and one of the most stressful if you’re not prepared. At Skelmersdale Removals, we’ve helped hundreds of families across West Lancashire move home, and we’ve seen first-hand what makes a move go smoothly and what causes unnecessary headaches on the day.

Here are our top 10 packing tips to help you get organised, protect your belongings and make moving day as stress-free as possible.

1. Start packing earlier than you think you need to

Most people underestimate how long packing takes. Start at least two weeks before your move and work through one room at a time. Begin with rooms you use least — spare bedrooms, loft storage and garages — and leave everyday essentials until last.

2. Declutter before you pack

There’s no point paying to move things you no longer need. Go through each room before you start packing and set aside anything to donate, sell or throw away. Less stuff means fewer boxes, a quicker move and a cleaner start in your new home.

3. Use quality packing materials

Supermarket boxes might seem like a free option, but they’re often weak and inconsistent in size. Invest in proper double-walled removal boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap and packing paper. Your belongings will be better protected and the boxes will stack more safely in the van.

4. Label every box clearly

Write the contents and destination room on every box — ideally on the top and at least one side. This saves enormous time on moving day when you’re directing the removal team and unpacking at the other end. Use a thick black marker so labels are easy to read.

5. Pack heavy items in small boxes

Books, crockery and tools are heavy. Pack them in small boxes so they’re manageable to lift. Use larger boxes for lighter items like bedding, cushions and clothing. This simple rule prevents injuries and damaged boxes.

6. Wrap fragile items individually

Wrap every fragile item separately in packing paper or bubble wrap. Place heavier items at the bottom of the box and lighter, more delicate items on top. Fill any gaps with scrunched paper to prevent items moving around in transit.

7. Keep an essentials box

Pack a separate box or bag with everything you’ll need on your first night — kettle, mugs, tea, phone chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes and any important documents. This box should travel in your car rather than the removal van so you can access it immediately.

8. Photograph your electronics before disconnecting

Take a quick photo of the cables behind your TV, computer and any other electronics before unplugging them. This makes it much easier to set everything up again in your new home without spending hours trying to remember what plugged in where.

9. Disassemble large furniture in advance

If you have flat-pack furniture or beds that need dismantling, do this the day before your move. Keep all screws, bolts and fixings in a labelled bag taped to the relevant piece of furniture so nothing gets lost.

10. Confirm everything with your removal company the day before

Give your removal team a call the day before to confirm the time, address and any access details such as parking restrictions or narrow roads. At Skelmersdale Removals, we always do a pre-move check with our customers to make sure moving day runs like clockwork.
